Will cloud computing kill the storage area network?

Deployment of the datacenter has undergone a standard position in the acceptance of the server and storage devices. The companies are moving from purchasing the separate physical servers connected to storage area networks (SANs) to more modular “reference architectures” which is having all the features required to run their applications.

Servers and storage systems were sold as different IT infrastructure products in the past, with the different price and sold to different group under different IT departments. But, the migration to the cloud has changed all these exercise. Recently there was a migration by a major server and storage vendor, who enabled their storage to directly connect to its blade servers, which made the storage network unnecessary.

All the necessary features that is required to run applications, provided by the modular converged architecture, which is now a simple building block for the datacenter. The storage area network provides only the limited features where the modular building blocks provides the all the necessary features including the storage area network to the network vendors.

In the cloud storage, everything is converged into single solution, and virtualized over a converged network so there will be no need for the traditional storage only network. The movement towards modular reference architectures as building blocks for large data centers is now also trickling down to small and medium-size businesses as the vendors shrink their building blocks into smaller scale “podlets”.

When there was a need for reducing the cost and datacenter infrastructure management, cloud computing solutions got started back. Large companies are following the cloud solutions. The companies that followed the storage are now following the network and the server providers are building the datacenter building blocks of the future.

  1. I would say it will transform SANs to virtual SANs. The concept of SAN is needed, but doesn't need to be using SAN hardware and Fibrechannel equipment, thus a physical SAN will be transformed in a virtual SAN.

With the increasing demand for networking of content, the analysts predict that the demand for enterprise network storage system will hugely rise within 5 years and will account for 75% of all computer hardware expenditures.
